Press Information

In director Curtis' vision, Richard III is removed from itsÂ’ period to an indeterminate time and place, creating a raw stark environment that will allow the play to be the thing.

Set Designer, Steve Kath is creating a mostly featureless industrial environment of corrugated steel and rivets for the weaving of webs by one of Shakespeare's most famous villains. This setting will be augmented by the lighting talents of Jen DeGolier and the text will be forwarded by an original score for percussion and live sound effects composed by Joseph Papke.

Curtis admits to being influenced in his presentation by his work with Michelle Hensley at 10,000 Things. This manifests in Papke's percussive score and a minimum of stage trappings. Believing that leaving the play in its own time only accentuates the historical inaccuracy, he is not inclined to locate another era and try to interpret the play appropriately. He feels that Richard III's focus on only its central story strongly supports removing it from time and place and allowing the play's text and message to shine forth.
