Thus was born the idea of Starting Gate's Actors Workshop. Once a month, for a nominal fee, experienced actors are provided a safe place to explore different elements of their craft. Monologues, cold readings, the basics of interpreting Shakespeare, Shakespearean monologues and a primer on the
Chekhov Method have all been tackled in the first six months. The format is flexible and allows for both traditional classes and moderated peer input workshops.
Monologue and cold reading workshops were moderated by Richard Jackson, whose bio and resume appear elsewhere on this site. Shakespeare classes were taught by Doug Scholz-Carlson; an Equity actor and founding board member of the Minnesota Shakespeare Project and Minnesota Shakespeare Festival at Grand Marais. David Lind, who taught an introductory workshop to the Chekhov Method, studied with such teachers as Lenard Petit, Joanna Merlin, and Jack Colvin. David also teaches classes on the Chekhov Method in Minneapolis.

The philosophy behind Starting Gate's Actors Workshop allows the participants to determine the selection of topics. Future workshops currently planned include directing, an introductory class on the Meisner Technique and more Shakespeare.
We invite you to come and play with us. We're providing a playground without the heavy time commitment working actors find difficult or the high cost starving actors don't want to spend.
